How Leadership Has Changed Over Generations

August 20, 2022 by Cornerstone International Group Leave a Comment

Servant leadership is not about giving up who you are as a person. Let me explain.

As we transitioned across the generations, with Millennials and now Gen Z entering the workforce, our style of leadership and expectations needed to change. We took classes, read articles, listened to podcasts and took advice from anyone that had experience with inspiring and motivating a workforce we thought of as lazy. The days of command and control and leading from a position of authority were over. The old style of leadership was coming to an end, and a new one was being adopted.

As leaders, we need to have a smattering of leadership styles in our toolbox. The foundation of who we are as leaders must be based on servant leadership (SL). The true measurement of leadership success is how engaged, satisfied and productive your workforce is, and the practice of SL is how we make that possible.

But How To Practice Servant Leadership

  • Actively listen: Show that you care by paying close attention to what is being stated. In fact, it’s more important to focus on people’s emotions than on what they actually say.
  • Have empathy:  This is all about putting yourself in their shoes. As workers, did we have any different challenges than our workforce? Just remembering how we felt in the same situations can help to practice healing.

Servant Leadership is all about serving others and focusing on the growth and well-being of those we invite into our organizations to assist with the company’s growth and success. In short, we can serve our workforce while still remembering the skills we learned from our past leaders.
